You can love your child enormously and still pass on things that hurt you too.
No one taught us how to be parents.
No one explained what to do when our child triggers our anger. No one taught us the difference between protection and control. No one told us how much of what we call “upbringing” is, in fact, something we automatically took on from our own parents.
We become mothers with a great deal of love, but also with our own baggage: our mother, our father, the way we were punished, shame, fear, “you must”, “you're not allowed”, “because I said so”, “stop crying”, “what will people say?” or “after everything I've done for you...”.
And, without realising it, we can start passing on exactly what we received.
Perhaps you've heard yourself say something to your child and, for a second, realised: “God... that's exactly what my mother used to say to me.”
Perhaps you swore you would never do certain things and catch yourself doing them. Under stress, tiredness, fear or conflict, we can fall back on the behaviours we learned earliest.
“Mother & Child” is a book of unbindings and personal reflection built to help you bring these automatic reactions to the surface, notice inherited programs and begin to build different responses in your relationship with your child.
“Stop crying.”
“You've got no reason to be upset.”
“I'm your mother, you'll do as I say.”
“Don't talk back to me.”
“You've embarrassed me.”
“Look how well-behaved that child is.”
“After everything I do for you...”
“It's your fault I got angry.”
“Finish everything on your plate.”
“I know what's best for you.”
For entire generations, many behaviours like these were simply considered upbringing. The book invites you to look at them again.
You will work with patterns related to:
It's about seeing. Because a behaviour you can't see is very hard to change.
Perhaps you did certain things because you were raised that way too. Perhaps you confused control with protection, sacrifice with love, obedience with respect or fear with discipline. Awareness gives you the possibility of a different choice.
Grandparents passed it on to parents. Parents passed it on to us. And we can pass it on to our children without realising it.
“This is what I received. But I don't have to pass all of it on.”
Your child doesn't need a mother who never makes mistakes. They need an adult who is able to notice, listen, take responsibility, repair and learn.
In this book we don't work towards perfection. We work towards awareness: so that your mother's voice doesn't automatically become the voice you use with your child, so that your fears don't automatically become their fears, and so that your wound doesn't become their responsibility.
control → guidance
fear → safety
shame → responsibility
obedience → cooperation
perfection → authenticity
possession → autonomy
guilt → repair
repetition → conscious choice
