The Prayer of the Heart — or the Jesus Prayer — is the hidden treasure of Orthodox tradition: a single sentence, repeated attentively with the breath until it descends from the mind into the heart and prays «on its own», even in sleep. It is the prayer of the Holy Mountain of Athos, of the pilgrim in «The Way of a Pilgrim» and of everyone who wants an uninterrupted connection with God.
The text of the Prayer of the Heart
Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God,
have mercy on me, a sinner.
Short forms to begin with:
- «Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me!»
- «Jesus, have mercy on me!» — a prayer anyone can say, anywhere, at any time.
How it is practised
- Rhythm with the breath: «Lord Jesus Christ» (inhale) — «Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner» (exhale);
- On a prayer rope (mătănii): one recitation for each knot, 100–300 a day;
- Walking: one recitation with every step — the journey becomes prayer;
- Idle moments: in queues, on transport, before sleep — precisely when the mind would otherwise stagnate.
The Holy Fathers (the Philokalia) describe the stages: prayer spoken with the mouth, then thought with the mind, then felt in the heart. Do not force the third stage — it comes as a gift, not as an achievement. «Prayer is not made through numbers, but through attention», says Saint Theophan the Recluse.
Why «have mercy on me»?
Mercy is not only forgiveness, but complete compassion: «save me, care for me, carry me». And «me, a sinner» is not self-contempt, but a simple truth — someone who knows they are loved precisely because they do not consider themselves perfect. This humility opens the door to grace: «God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble» (James 4:6).
The effects — what practitioners say
- Inner peace gradually replaces agitation;
- Bad thoughts «have no room left» — the mind has a holy occupation;
- Fear and anger lose their power — prayer becomes a reflex;
- Prayer for others (adapt their names in the formula: «have mercy on...») becomes natural.
Frequently asked questions
Who can recite the Prayer of the Heart? Anyone — monk or layperson, elderly person or child. «The Jesus Prayer is for everyone», say the Fathers. For advanced practice (with breathing techniques), the Church recommends a spiritual father.
How many times a day? Saint Nicodemus of the Holy Mountain suggested 3,000 a day for beginners — but start instead with 100, attentively. Quality outweighs numbers.
