Saint Michael the Archangel — whose name means “Who is like God?” — is the commander of the angelic hosts, the one who defeated the dragon in Revelation. In Romanian tradition he is the archangel of protection and judgment, usually depicted with a sword and scales. His help is sought in every struggle: with fear, with visible and invisible evil, with temptations that seem stronger than us.
Prayer to Saint Michael the Archangel
Saint Michael the Archangel, our mighty defender,
through the gift God has given you,
deliver me from all evil,
from every visible and invisible enemy,
and guide me towards the salvation of my soul.O commander of the angelic hosts,
receive my humble prayer
and raise it before the throne of God,
that He may have mercy on me and my loved ones. Amen.
The short prayer (in danger)
Saint Michael the Archangel, sword of God, defend me!
Who Saint Michael is
Scripture presents him as the victor in the war in heaven: “And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon” (Revelation 12:7). Orthodox tradition calls him the “Archangel of the fear of God” — not fear of him, but the holy fear that drives away evil. His icon usually stands at the entrance to Romanian churches, just as his prayer stands at the “entrance” to the day: many recite it in the morning, before leaving home.
When it is recited
- In times of intense fear, panic attacks or a sense of harmful influence;
- For the home and family — it is recited when entering a new home;
- During periods of conflicts and court cases — Michael is also the angel of justice;
- On 8 November, the Synaxis of the Holy Angels — a feast day and a day of remembrance for the dead (some monasteries celebrate the Sacrament of Holy Unction);
- Together with the Guardian Angel prayer and Psalm 90 — the classic triad of protection.
Frequently asked questions
Michael and Gabriel — what is the difference? Gabriel is the messenger (the Annunciation), Michael the warrior. Both are archangels and are celebrated together on 8 November.
Is there a prayer to Saint Michael against witchcraft? In folk tradition, the prayer to Saint Michael and Psalm 90 are the most commonly used “shields” against the evil eye and the works of evil. The Church nevertheless recommends confession and Holy Communion first — the principal weapon.
