Manipulation techniques: how to recognize them and protect yourself

Cristina Balan Written byCristina Balan

I hear the same story more and more often: “Cristina, how could they catch me? I thought I knew how to spot it.” And I answer you as I wish someone had answered me a few years ago: you are not weak. You simply did not know. There are people who use manipulation techniques as naturally as they breathe — techniques used even by professional investigators. When you know them, they are no longer a mystery. When you do not, you do not even realize when they have caught you.

In sessions and constellations, I have seen what a manipulator looks like inside: zero emotions, everything a cold calculation — “I am serving my own interests, what's the problem?” Below, I share everything I unpacked in the live stream: what manipulation is, why it hooks into your wound, the techniques by name and how to regain your power.

What manipulation actually is

Manipulation means someone getting you to do or create something without the idea having been yours and without you realizing it. It is not direct. It comes drop by drop, through little phrases and little games, and one day you wake up in a life you did not choose. Its essence: it overrides your free will.

Behind it is always the same desire: to control and dominate. The main tools: lying, falsehood and — pay attention — omission. The person does not lie to your face; they simply tell you nothing and let you move toward your dream: “well, I never told you anything”. And a lie repeated often enough becomes truth: constant dripping wears away stone.

Why it works on you: the wound that responds

These techniques do not work on everyone, but on the right wound. Few people tell you that. Our brain has needs that manipulators exploit like professionals:

  • Belonging. We do as the group does so we will be accepted.
  • Reciprocity. Someone gives you one leu to get a billion out of you. If they gave you something, you feel indebted.
  • The investment loop. You put in time, years, money, soul — and the mind is not made to cut off an investment: “I cannot just throw everything away now”.
  • Longing for perfection. Someone who grew up alongside a narcissistic parent learned to love perfection. And when you seek perfection, you are often really seeking to be lied to.

We attract one another through trauma, but call it love. If you had narcissists in childhood, you will probably go through two or three more similar relationships, because you still have healing to do. Until you heal, the wound responds for you.

And a story of mine: during my years in management, I joined a large finance company with salaries 30% above the market. What they did not say at the interview: an inhuman pace, everything designed as a trap — you left your job, it was hard to find another at that level, so you stayed and worked three times as much until you burned out. Since then I have had a rule: when it is too beautiful, it may also be too false.

The techniques I name in live streams

Lying, omission and false politeness

The narcissist does not only lie directly. They omit, stay silent, smile politely and let you believe what suits them. Politeness is not always a sign of a good person — sometimes it is the predator's perfect costume.

Love bombing, or flattery before the knife

At first comes the wave: “How are you, beautiful?”, “come on, I know you can do it”, compliments, maximum attention. Normal people do not throw themselves at you like that on the second day. And flattery is the stage before they put a knife in your back. If you feel validated when a stranger bombards you with admiration, the signal lies within you: you lack self-love.

Gaslighting — “it did not happen that way”

“It was not like that at all.” “You are imagining things again.” “You misunderstood me.” Even an entire marriage becomes, in their story, “a small communication misunderstanding”. The goal: to make you doubt your reality, to push their madness onto you until you come to believe you are mad. You know what happened.

Diverting attention and triangulation

When you say something they do not like, they change the subject or answer completely beside the question — leaving you with fog in your head (cognitive dissonance, programmed, not accidental). This also includes not telling you directly but telling someone else so that person tells you, or comparing you with others from morning to night to create competition and distrust. Many narcissistic families work this way: one child praised, another criticized, each turned against the other.

Jokes that hurt and the hooked compliment

“You have gained weight, but it suits you.” “It's funny... but you really still haven't understood.” These jokes are not jokes: they hit your sensitive spot exactly, day after day, until you lose confidence. A child growing up under them builds other survival mechanisms. You are not strange. You survived.

Silence as punishment (silent treatment)

They stay silent. You ask what is wrong — nothing. They remain silent. For an empathic person, this silence is torture: you go out of your mind trying to guess what you did wrong. It is punishment and domination, not being upset — I wrote about why it hurts so much in the guide to empathy and empaths.

Hot and cold, and the trauma bond

Lots of warmth, then ice. Ignoring, then love bombing. They leave, return, leave, return. This up-and-down wave creates a real dependence that is very difficult to break, and the abuse loop grows ever larger. It is not weakness: it is chemistry and an old wound. The way out begins with the inner child — I also write about it in the article on lack of self-confidence.

Guilt-tripping and guilt-tripping through giving

“After all the sacrifices I made for you.” “If you really love me, you will do this for me.” They arrange the situation so the blame falls on you, allowing them to control you — and usually three things are involved: energy, money and sex. And the version with “look, I did this for you”: someone who gives to put you in their debt is not giving out of love — they are buying you.

“I am worried about you”

The friend finding danger in everything you do, the family choosing your friends and career “out of love”. Behind the worry is the desire to isolate and control you. They are thieves of joy: they lower your vibration and take your enthusiasm. This also includes “don't let me down, I am counting on you” — it works only where you have no boundaries.

Projection and reversing roles

“Not me — you!” They throw their blame and behavior onto you: the abuser cries in the victim role, and you appear as the aggressor. The real victim ends up apologizing.

Healthy influence versus manipulation

Not every influence is manipulation. The difference is the intention behind it and the direction:

Healthy influence Manipulation
Transparent, direct, honest Hidden, indirect, one-way
Presents ideas and arguments Pours thoughts and emotions into you drop by drop
Respects your free will Overrides your free will
Result: trust, motivation, autonomy Result: distrust, exhaustion, dependence

A simple test: if at work or in a relationship you constantly feel not good enough, unappreciated, guilty — perhaps it is not just your problem. Perhaps it is the environment.

How to regain discernment: the body knows first

Your body is the first to give you signals. “If it doesn't feel right, it's not right” — if it does not feel right, it is not right. Tingling, heaviness, fog, a tight stomach: these are the answers. The mind comes after the body and tells stories — finds excuses for the other person, rationalizes. That is why you should not follow the mind first.

Then check your assumptions:

  • Was it your idea? If not, ask yourself who put it in your head.
  • Is it just words, or are there actions? Lots of beautiful words, zero action — a clear signal.
  • What are you saying “yes” to? Do not say yes to anything — people, rituals, commitments — without knowing what you are committing to.
  • Who is the adult here? When someone puts their responsibility on your shoulders, ask, “Why me, specifically?”

And very importantly: do not fight a manipulator. They have no emotions; you do. You cannot beat them at their game, because it is their game: you argue, they calculate.

What to do when you recognize a manipulation technique

  1. Take a step back and do not respond in anger — it is used against you. Say clearly, “What you just said hurt me.” Do not justify yourself. If you keep saying “I am sorry” for everything, you have work to do on self-love — you are easy prey for any manipulator.
  2. Set the boundary: “Such things are not said to me. I do not accept this.” We begin to exist psychologically the moment we say no. Until then, people pass through us like a railway station.
  3. Do not fight — raise your vibration. While you remain in a fight with a narcissist, you pay with your future. Raise your share of light and love — and, as I say, after that nobody catches you anymore.
  4. Create distance. You cannot heal in the environment where you became ill. If you have children and must communicate, keep everything in writing — not to change them (they do not change), but to protect yourself.
  5. Applaud your progress. My first narcissistic relationship lasted 14 years, the next six months, then two. In place of the inner critic, put the “Well done” program.

And remember: it is an illusion to think someone changes for you. Whoever wants to change changes themselves — and nobody from outside comes to save you. God works through you, first and foremost. I wrote about signs of narcissism and toxic behaviors here, and about protecting your energy and inner space in the article on spiritual defenses.

Daily energetic protection

Manipulation does not pass only through the psyche — it passes through energy too. What I do daily:

  • Salt. It remains the foundation of releases: stand with your feet on salt and say the cleansing phrases you feel coming to you.
  • Vows on salt. On salt, the vibration is amplified: I said there, “Yes to God. Yes to life. Yes to love.” — three times each — and the whole field settled. Do not mix rituals: either cleansing or rising.
  • In the morning, cancel the night. If you dreamed something you did not want: “I cancel everything that happened last night without my conscious consent.”
  • Cancel the programs. “I cancel the program ‘I am less than others’.” Comparison programs, often placed in childhood, are the thread manipulators pull.
  • Protection oil. Protection Mix essential oil — on the third eye and solar plexus, to keep my field closed to what does not belong to me.

And the golden rule: cleansing is in vain if you do not rise. Rise in light, love and good deeds — and others' games have nowhere to attach.

Frequently asked questions about manipulation

How can I tell whether I am being manipulated?

The first signal is the body: fog, heaviness, tingling, the sense that something is wrong. Then check: was it your idea or theirs? Does it happen once, or is it a regular pattern? Do you doubt your memories? A body that feels bad plus a mind constantly finding excuses for the other person — the classic sign.

Why can I not leave a manipulative relationship?

Because several levels are involved: the investment loop, the dependence created by the hot-and-cold cycle, and the childhood wound that confuses longing with love. It is not weakness. But the loop tightens more and more.

Can I “win” a discussion with a manipulator?

No. They have no emotions and have played this game since childhood. Do not fight — set the boundary, create distance and invest your energy in raising yourself.

What do I do the first moment I realize I am being manipulated?

Take a step back, do not respond in anger, rephrase what was said to you and clearly say that it hurts. Then set the boundary: “I do not accept this. It does not belong to me.” The first time is the hardest; after the first boundary, the next ones come more easily.

Can I protect myself energetically from manipulation?

Yes: salt and regular releases, the vows “Yes to God, yes to life, yes to love”, canceling comparison programs and raising vibration. The complete guide is in the article on spiritual defenses.

Do not blame yourself for what you lived through: it is not your fault that people without emotions who hunt people with hearts exist in this world. The lesson is yours to take, not to weep over. After everything I went through, I told myself something I no longer let go of: I am queen in my reality. You are king or queen in your reality, and nobody comes to make rules in your life. Work on the wound that responded, listen to your body, raise your vibration. Sending you a kiss, and I look forward to seeing you at the next live stream.
