Spiritual awakening: what it is, signs, and the stages of leaving the matrix

Cristina Balan Written byCristina Balan

Many people believe spiritual awakening is one thing and self-work is another. It is not so. They are exactly the same: the more you work on yourself, the more you free yourself. It does not arrive like a bolt from the blue; it comes slowly as you remove what is not you.

For me, the great awakening means returning from the self to the self. The longest journey you make in this life is actually the journey from heart to heart. And ‘leaving the matrix’ — the expression I often use in livestreams — is an image: leaving the programs, patterns, and conditioning we grew up with and accepted as ‘that is who I am’.

Below I explain spiritual awakening as I experienced it, the signs by which you recognize it, the stages people I work with go through, and the disconnection exercise we did together in the livestream.

What spiritual awakening is

The first question someone beginning to awaken usually asks is: what is the purpose of my life? I have asked myself this since childhood. Surely we did not come only to eat, work, and go on vacation — even though we can enjoy all those things.

Here is what I understand by awakening:

  • You remember you are not only the body. The body is like an avatar — as in the film Avatar, where a consciousness enters a body so it can play the game. You are the soul animating it. Care for the body, but do not reduce yourself to it.
  • It is not a destination, but a journey. I have seen people say: ‘That is it, I have awakened; now I spend all day teaching you.’ Wait a little. You need to keep working because this journey is infinite.
  • It is not merely telling yourself ‘I am light’. Sometimes I tell people who come with this directly: you are in the basement. Remove the programs keeping you there, and then we can talk about light.
  • It is your connection with God restored. You can pray to God in church, at home, wherever you wish. What matters is that your connection with the divine is permanent. I wrote more about the center of this connection in the article on the crown chakra and connection with the divine.

And something else I always say: there is no personal development without psychology, and there is no personal development without God. You need both.

What ‘leaving the matrix’ means

When I talk about the matrix, I use the image from the film Matrix: a person connected by cables to a system feeding on their energy, until someone removes the cable from their back. Or Truman Show: you live in a set you mistake for reality. To me, the matrix is all the programs you run on autopilot:

  • ‘I cannot.’ ‘I am not enough.’ ‘I have no money.’ These are not truths about you, but packages of programs you live unconsciously.
  • The criticism you took upon yourself. In English, spell means an enchantment, while spelling is how you write words. When someone says you are stupid and you take it upon yourself, that functions like a spell. Perfectionism and criticism programs destroyed the creativity of many of us.
  • The ego. The ego is not a structure of the soul. It is a structure forming from childhood so you can play the game here. The problem is we came to identify with the game and forgot who we are.
  • Repeated thoughts. How many of today’s thoughts are original? More than 95% are thoughts you have had before — that is the matrix in its pure form.

Chasing only the material world is the greatest illusion. The material is a consequence, not the starting point. The world is spiritual first.

Signs of spiritual awakening

Not everyone experiences all of them or in this order. But these are the signs I experienced and people tell me about in livestreams:

  • You can no longer stay in the old. You feel a need to clean, discard things, and change your home’s energy. Wind cannot fill unopened sails: neither can God bring you something new if you have not let the old go.
  • You wake at 3 or 4 in the morning. Angels wake me at that time. In the Sikh tradition, the period from 3 to 6 in the morning is called amrit vela — the veil is thinnest then, and messages pass through most easily. However, if you cannot sleep for several nights in a row, feel exhausted, or feel restless, see a doctor: sleep problems should be checked by a doctor first.
  • You feel tired during large waves of energy. If you are tired, sleep. I wrote in depth about fatigue and waves of light in the article on the light body and spiritual activations.
  • Life hits you hard when you are on the wrong path. It is not punishment — it is life bringing you back to your path.
  • You no longer tolerate crowds, noise, or drinking. It is not snobbery; it is a different vibration.
  • You have intuitions or visions. Intuition is the soul’s voice. Do not seek external validation — what matters is that you know.
  • You no longer feel a need to convince anyone. If you feel you need to prove something, you still have work to do on yourself. Leave them be; it is not your problem.
  • You feel a need to create. At a certain level, the soul’s main need becomes: I want to create. If you do not create, you feel frustrated.

An important warning. Awakening can bring old emotions and intense states to the surface. If you experience strong anxiety, panic attacks, prolonged insomnia, a feeling that reality is no longer real, or thoughts that frighten you, seek help from a doctor or psychologist. Spiritual work can support you, but does not replace specialist consultation.

The stages of spiritual awakening as I see them

For people I work with individually, the journey usually looks roughly like this — faster or slower, depending on each person’s trauma level.

1. The inner child

The first thing, before anything else. The first sign, when you lack energy and feel worn out by life, is that your inner child is not with you. If the child remained somewhere in trauma, you live without an essential part of yourself. We will not move into business, abundance, or anywhere until you are whole at home. The inner child is closest to the soul and often holds the key.

2. Mother and father

Then the relationship with mother and the relationship with father. Often resentment toward men or women comes from here, from the relationship with parents and the inner child.

3. Partners and children

Current relationships follow: partners, former partners, children. Here appears the greatest manipulation program I see: waiting for the other person to love you because you do not love yourself. That is not happiness; it is codependency.

4. Programs of lack and powerlessness

Only then do we tackle abundance: ‘I cannot’, ‘I do not want to’, ‘I am not enough’, ‘I do not see myself there’. The Universe is abundance; we carry the programs of lack.

5. The mind stage

Many get stuck here. They reach a mental stage and keep going around like a stuck record in their mind, in the same loop. How can you tell? You say ‘I am trying’. When you say ‘I am trying’, you circle inside ‘I am trying’. Manifestation sounds different: I do, I am, I feel. None of the chakras has the mantra ‘I am trying’.

The mind wants to control, and control is a form of ego. That is why the stage in which you leave everything in God’s hands is essential. When something great comes to them — true love, for example — many run away: we want infinity, but are not yet ready to hold it.

6. Disconnecting from the matrix

Only after all this comes ‘unplugging’ from the matrix: you stop running old programs and settle within yourself. I can tell you from personal experience: today I am not who I was two years ago. I am another person.

The mind, the wild horse

The image that always comes to me is this: your mind is a wild horse that has bound your hands and feet and drags you through the desert and dust. Until you rein in your mind, what abundance do you expect?

Not all thoughts flying through you are yours. A few things that helped me:

  • Catch yourself when you say ‘I am trying’ and replace it with ‘I do’.
  • Practice another way of thinking. Linear thinking — ‘either it is this way or it is not’ — is very limited. There is also circular thinking, in which white and black can both be true. Mandelbrot fractals helped me — I have a playlist of them on YouTube.
  • Spend a few minutes in the waking state each morning, before the mind revs up. Do not jump out of bed. The soul’s voice is quiet but very powerful.
  • Be careful where you place your attention. Your attention needs to be on creation, on yourself.

The leaving-the-matrix exercise from the livestream

In the ‘Leaving the matrix’ livestream, we did a disconnection together. I leave it here step by step. Do it with intention and at your own pace.

  1. Center yourself. Keep your spine straight. If available, you can work on salt and with musk essential oil.
  2. See the cables. Visualize the cables around your body connecting you to the matrix — to old programs, other people’s expectations, and inherited fears.
  3. Leave by your free will. Say: ‘By my free will, I leave the matrix.’ And see the cables spring out of your body.
  4. Remove those that remain. On your hands and feet. At the root chakra, the cable usually pulls you downward: imagine it is like a weed feeding on you, and pull it out.
  5. Feel yourself becoming lighter. The body rises in vibration and becomes lighter.
  6. Wash yourself. Imagine yourself in a barrel of ethereal musk, and bathe there. Then ask the water element to come and wash you from the head downward. You open like a ripe pomegranate and let everything that is no longer yours flow away. You can also use air and fire — they are powerful cleansing forces.
  7. Give what is heavy to the Earth. Leave the old energies with Mother Earth — she knows how to turn them into flowers.
  8. Close. ‘My body belongs to me and me alone, and I allow nobody to affect it.’

The phrases I said aloud in the livestream:

  1. I cancel all contracts binding me to the matrix.
  2. I disconnect from the matrix and allow nobody to affect my energy. I am sovereign over my energy and consciousness.
  3. I activate my power as a creator and alchemize all my traumas into spiritual strength.
  4. I cancel all separation programs and alchemize them into communion with the divine.
  5. I cancel all blockages on my connection with God.
  6. I cancel the ‘I cannot’ program and alchemize it into ‘I do’.
  7. I break all programs keeping me in the old circle and alchemize them into strength. I consciously leave my comfort zone. (If it comes to you, visualize burning that circle and expanding it.)
  8. I call back all my soul pieces, activate my original vibration, and cleanse myself of all vibrations that are not mine.

We did not take on traumas for nothing: we took them as fuel to rise. If you burp or yawn during the phrases, it is normal — you are cleansing yourself. If reactions become strong or do not pass, stop and see a doctor.

Awakening through creation and art

I began painting in May 2023 as a form of expression. Art speaks directly to the inner child — to what happened before we could speak. You do not work through that with talk alone, but through play, music, drawing, and creative activity.

I realized that our true nature is that of a creator, not a worker. When I do not paint, I feel frustrated. If you have visions, give them form.

A simple exercise I did in the livestream with one of my paintings (you can use any image that attracts you):

  1. Look at the painting for at least two minutes and stop the mind.
  2. Let your attention enter it until you feel there is no separation between you and the painting.
  3. Allow everything that does not resonate with it to leave you through your spine and legs.
  4. Absorb its vibration throughout your body.

This exercise helped me understand there is no separation between me and reality. If you want to see the works from which these meditations arose, you can find them in the spiritual paintings collection.

Place beautiful things before your eyes. And when something ugly comes toward you, say: ‘Thank you, but I choose something else.’

What spiritual awakening is not

  • You do not need initiation from anyone. You can become your own guide; there is no separation between you and God. The ego tells you that you need someone to save you.
  • It does not begin with the spectacular. I noticed the first thing the ego wants is spectacular experiences — past lives, messages, visions. Start with yourself.
  • It is not escaping yourself. I traveled alone for two weeks, almost without speaking to anyone. Work, food, screens — these are often distractions through which we escape ourselves. When you sit alone with yourself, everything that needs to emerge comes out.
  • It is not changing the world. Yesterday I was clever and wanted to change the world; today I am wise and change myself.

Frequently asked questions about spiritual awakening

What is spiritual awakening?

It is returning from yourself to yourself: remembering you are a soul, not just a body, and leaving the programs you grew up in. Spiritual awakening and self-work follow the same path.

What are the signs of spiritual awakening?

You question life’s purpose, cannot stay in the old, wake at 3–4 in the morning, tire during intense periods, have clearer intuitions, and feel a need to create. If these states become overwhelming, seek help from a doctor or psychologist.

What does ‘leaving the matrix’ mean?

For me, it is a metaphor taken from the film Matrix: leaving the programs and patterns you run on autopilot — ‘I cannot’, ‘I am not enough’, and criticism you took upon yourself.

What are the stages of spiritual awakening?

As I see them: the inner child, mother and father, current relationships, lack programs, the mind stage — in which you leave everything in God’s hands — and disconnection from old patterns.

Does spiritual awakening ever end?

No. The journey is infinite. What do you do before awakening? Sweep and work. What do you do afterwards? Sweep and work. Only the perspective changes, and you are no longer unhappy.

Do I need initiation to awaken?

No. There is no separation between you and God. Work on yourself patiently and keep your connection with the divine alive.

Live your life here, ground yourself, and be happy now, not ‘after awakening’. Sending you a kiss, and I look forward to seeing you in the livestream.
