How to meditate: meditation techniques, mantras, and colors (guided meditation included)

Cristina Balan Written byCristina Balan

When I began meditating, I started with guided meditations. Later, meditation becomes a way of being: you stand in the checkout queue and meditate, actually anchoring yourself within. This is what I wish for you too. If you wonder how to meditate, you need nothing special: your breath and a little courage to be with yourself.

Meditation helps you switch off the mind. This is essential: there is no spirituality without a quiet mind. The mind takes you to a certain level; beyond it is no longer its domain. There, you connect through intuition, the heart, spirit — light to light.

Below I share meditation techniques from my livestreams: holding the breath, consciousness in the chest, the two-triangle meditation along the chakra channel, the mantras I listen to, and colors with their vibrations.

Why meditate: the mind has its role, but not everywhere

The mind is for tasks, for the operational side, and always lives in the past. We were conditioned to put only the mind forward, but the body has its own intelligence and the soul its own path. When you set the mind aside a little and listen to the soul’s path, opportunities, people, and ideas come, and life becomes much easier.

In meditation I often tell myself: ‘I am consciousness resting on the void.’ We came from the void and return to it. When you rest on the void, new horizons of consciousness open.

Do not fear the void. If you are afraid, that is the mind and ego; simply tell them: ‘It is okay.’ Someone told me they felt they meditated for five minutes, when four hours had actually passed. There is no reason to be frightened. The more you meditate, the further you go.

How to meditate: the basic techniques

1. Holding the breath

The easiest way to quiet the mind is to interrupt your breathing. Inhale and pause: hold your breath. At the moment you hold your breath, try to have no thoughts. Simply remain like that. The mind does not speak.

You can do it at any time of day. For me, releasing the breath very slowly works — I stay in that state longer. Breath is the key: through it we access different levels of consciousness. Do not force it: if you have heart, breathing, or blood pressure problems, or feel dizzy, breathe normally and ask a doctor before practicing breath-holding.

2. Bring your consciousness down into the chest

Bring your consciousness into the chest and again be silent. Simply feel. Sometimes you feel energies in the body; let them be.

3. A straight spine

As in kundalini yoga: you have an energy channel through the center, and keeping your spine straight allows energy to flow differently.

4. Surrounding noise does not define you

During the livestream, my children were bustling around the house just as we meditated. We train regardless of noise: it does not belong to you and does not define what you do.

5. Trust the body

If you feel like making hand gestures, do them. The body has its intelligence; some know mudras without learning them in this life. If a mudra hurts your hands, release it.

The two-triangle meditation along the chakra channel (step by step)

This is the meditation we did in the livestream at the full moon. It cleanses the whole channel, from bottom to top. It is no problem if not all your chakras are open: you will stop at some point and work on the part you can work on.

  1. Position yourself with your spine straight and imagine the energy channel through the middle of your body.
  2. Imagine two triangles, one pointing down and one pointing up. Spin them right or left as your intuition tells you.
  3. Draw energy up the channel from below, from the root chakra, and raise it to the sacral. The triangles work continuously, like clothes being wrung out: old energies flow out. Push the stream from below with your consciousness.
  4. At the sacral chakra you see an orange point; perceive how large it is. Pricking sensations in the body are okay: energy work is taking place. If you feel something flowing, let it flow — you make room for something else.
  5. At the solar plexus, at the navel, it is yellow, the abundance chakra. Spin it. It is not only that chakra spinning: the whole channel, from the root, rises and spins.
  6. At the heart, green, at 528 Hz, the stream fills with love. Where you feel blocks, push the stream.
  7. At the throat, blue, imagine all unspoken words and unsung songs coming out. Bring love from your chest to the throat so you do not simply throw words into the Universe. Coughing or burping is okay: where the effect is greatest, there is work to do.
  8. At the third eye, if it is open, you will see things; if not, you cleanse it anyway — chakras open through working on them. Feel energy coming from above and joining your column. Stay upright and let yourself receive.
  9. The silver thread. Imagine a silver thread through the middle of your body, from below to the eyes. It enters through the third eye and descends through the spine, making a loop between chakras: energy rises in front and descends behind. The energy from above is lighter; this airs out the lower energies and raises more substance upwards. You can also see the loop as an 8, the infinity sign.
  10. Return gently. In the livestream we stopped here, without the crown chakra — I did not feel it was needed.

Observe energy transforming along the way: it starts below as strength, becomes creativity, then confidence, then love, and through the throat chakra you expand into the world. If you want to work more on the third eye, I wrote separately about opening the third eye.

Two ways to cleanse a chakra

  • Petal by petal: take each chakra petal, one by one, and rub it with energy.
  • The spiral: imagine the energy stream as a vertical spiral and spin it.

What you may feel in meditation

  • Buzzing in the head, something at the temple, ringing in the ears. I feel these as accessing other frequencies.
  • Tingling under the skin. Move the energy through the body or take a bath.
  • Dizziness, especially when receiving much light or working on something never worked on before.
  • Coughing, yawning, burping — especially at the throat.

If sensations are intense or do not pass, stop and see a doctor. And I do not support work that destroys the person: work within what is bearable and lets you function well in daily life. If you feel detached from 3D, ease off — garden or do housework. The idea is to unite heaven and earth.

The ‘God Exists’ meditation: letting yourself receive

At the end of the livestream, we did a short, very gentle meditation. You can do it whenever you feel alone:

  1. Close your eyes and descend into the chest. What kind of energy do you see or feel? Remember: you are in a safe space; you are not alone in the field.
  2. Inhale, hold the breath, then exhale slowly.
  3. Imagine a drop flowing down from above.
  4. God exists around you like a protective bubble. Your relationship with God is protected. You are safe.
  5. Let yourself receive. Allow your column to open and whatever needs to enter from above to enter. It is your birthright.
  6. Place your hands before the heart as a sign of receiving, and when you feel it, place them on your chest. Feel the warmth.
  7. You are not alone and have never been alone. Return when you wish.

Mantras: how to meditate with a mantra

Words have creative power: how we speak is how things manifest. There have been many mantras on my spiritual path, and I do not think a week passes without listening to them.

Mantras hold vibrations. They generally need to be chanted 108 times, and the sound positions your energy body where it needs to be. When meditating without music, you go where you need to go; with a mantra, you go into its vibration.

How to meditate with a mantra:

  • Posture: generally, for mantras, the lotus position, with the spine very straight, so energy flows. For mantras of strength you can also activate agni mudra.
  • Do not choose with an agenda. Mantras contain information revealed through divine grace. When you act with an agenda, you are in spiritual materialism. Let yourself be carried: some mantras will resonate more with you than others.
  • A guided meditation is not necessary. Often I simply play the mantra and meditate, or fall asleep to it.
  • If you cry, it depends on the vibration of the crying: perhaps a past life activates, perhaps the soul cries. Yawning is cleansing.

What does listening to high-vibration music cost you? Nothing. All religions speak of the same God, each in its own way; regarding the energy body, Buddhists and Hindus went very deep. In Romania too, there is a reason the semantron is struck at monasteries: sound opens the field.

I too went through a period of strong energetic attacks when I was not yet working with essential oils. I worked at the computer listening to mantras all day. They cleansed me thoroughly.

Which mantras I listen to, and why

  • Shiva — destroys the old so something new can appear. My favorite: Shambho Shankara Namah Shivaya; I listen for ten minutes and meditate with it.
  • Ram (Jai Ram), an avatar of Vishnu — for self-confidence; it raises vibration at chakra 3.
  • Ugram Viram Maha Vishnum — a mantra of strength, solar. When I meditated with it in the livestream, all my fire energy activated. Spin chakra 3 with it.
  • Krishna — aligns you with the vibration of love. Lakshmi — for abundance.
  • Ganesha — removes obstacles; the mantra beginning with Om Shreem Hreem Kleem Glaum Gam gives you a good shake.
  • Tara — Green Tara is for love, Red Tara for battle, others for protection. Om Tare Tuttare Ture Soha, repeated many times, activates and also helps cleanse spells.
  • Gayatri Mantra, sung by Deva Premal — helped me during a period when I needed not to implode.
  • Aad Guray Nameh — the guru comes to the student when the student is ready.
  • Kali — for warriors of light. Kali Durge Namo Namah is easy to learn, and you feel fire rising within you.
  • Avalokiteshvara — compassion, the vibration of ‘everything will be all right’. Kuan Yin, on the pink flame — play it before sleep.
  • Om Sachchidananda Parabrahma — this and Gayatri carried me furthest. They take you straight into the spiritual: it is the highway.

Tibetan, Chinese, and Japanese mantras are gentler, zen. On my YouTube channel I have playlists for each: Shiva, Vishnu, self-confidence, Buddha, Kali, abundance, love, ‘Fearless’. The livestream where we listened together is here: Which Mantras We Listen To.

Colors and their vibration in meditation

On the spiritual awakening path, colors matter, especially if you have a visual brain. We believe our only language is spoken, but in higher dimensions people also communicate through colors. When I meditate, the colors I see are vivid, almost fluorescent.

Each color has its own vibration. No color is good or bad: red has the lowest vibration, violet the highest. We work with colors at the chakras: to activate the root chakra, eat or wear red. You saw the path in the meditation: red, orange, yellow, green, blue. If one stops, look at the 7 signs of blocked chakras.

A few things I apply:

  • What you look at is what you become. Keep beautiful, organized things around you.
  • Dress in all colors. Black is elegant, but wearing it all the time has a low vibration. White is recommended in kundalini yoga and really is a different vibration. If you always wear only three colors, that is the energy you bathe in.
  • Paint and draw. I paint a lot, especially sacred geometry; I even painted a meditation with triangles and light flowing from above. Painting is meditation too. Some paintings are in the spiritual paintings collection.

In the colors livestream, I had an image consultant as a guest with simple ideas: when lacking energy, surround yourself with yellow; purple and pink are good for the bedroom; you can cut a round piece of cardboard and color it in the color you need. Periods of life changes also often coincide with changes in favorite colors. You can find the whole livestream here: Colors and Their Vibration.

To complement meditation with scent, you can use an oil for all chakras, such as Mix 7 Chakre.

Frequently asked questions about meditation

How do you meditate as a beginner?

Start with guided meditations and a simple exercise: inhale, hold your breath, have no thoughts, then release the air very slowly. Or bring your consciousness into the chest and remain silent with your spine straight.

Which meditation techniques are good for cleansing chakras?

The two-triangle meditation, cleansing the channel from the root to the third eye, then the loop along the silver thread. You can also cleanse a chakra petal by petal or with an energy spiral.

How many times is a mantra repeated?

Generally 108 times. Mantras should be chanted; you can listen, chant, or meditate with them, preferably in lotus with a straight spine.

Which mantras should I listen to?

It depends on what you need: Shiva to destroy the old, Ram for confidence, Krishna for love, Lakshmi for abundance, Ganesha for obstacles, Kali for strength. Let yourself feel which resonates.

Is feeling dizzy or tingling during meditation normal?

Dizziness, tingling, buzzing in the head, yawning, or burping can occur, especially when working on something never worked on before. If sensations are intense or do not pass, stop and see a doctor.

Which color has the highest vibration?

Violet. Red has the lowest vibration, but that does not mean it is bad: every color has its purpose, and in chakra work you use them all.

Meditation is not an exam. Rest on the void, breathe, let yourself receive. You are not alone and never have been. Sending you a kiss, and I look forward to seeing you at the next livestream.

Meditation: how to begin with a few minutes

You can begin meditation with a few minutes in a comfortable position, observing a simple reference point in the present. You do not have to stop all thoughts or pursue an intense experience.

A beginning you can return to

Choose a time when you can be still without rushing. You can keep your eyes open and notice sounds or natural breathing. If attention wanders, return gently to the reference point. Guided meditation is support, not an obligation: you can interrupt instructions that agitate you or feel uncomfortable.

An exercise you can adapt

Set a period of two to five minutes. Notice a sound, contact with the chair, or an object in the room. At the end, look around and choose the next activity. Do not judge the practice by the number of thoughts.

Frequently asked question

Must I meditate with my eyes closed? No. Choose the option comfortable for you and stop if unpleasant reactions occur.

Continue at your own pace

Choose a single theme you can look at today. Written support lets you return to it without having to find a different starting point each time. Spiritual practices are forms of personal reflection; they do not replace the medical, psychological, or legal help you need.

Guided meditation: how to choose and begin

Guided meditation uses a voice or text to direct attention through a sequence of steps. At first, following a structure may be easier than deciding yourself what to do each minute. You are not obliged to produce a particular state or follow every instruction in the recording.

What guidance offers

Choose a short practice and a time when you are not driving or using equipment requiring attention. Read the theme and duration before starting. A title about calm does not automatically tell you how intense the exercise is.

What to check in the description

A useful guide tells you what you will do and allows you to adapt your position, keep your eyes open, or stop. For your first attempts, choose a simple theme oriented towards the present. Do not begin with an exercise asking you to relive difficult memories simply because it promises quick results.

If the recording is part of a course, check what you are buying: the number of materials, the access format, and the program description. An unlisted workshop intended for students must be accessed through the corresponding course.

A beginning in three steps

Get comfortable and notice a few things around you. Listen to the guidance, keeping the right to skip an instruction that does not suit you. At the end, write one sentence about how the practice felt and whether you want to repeat it.

If attention shifts to other thoughts, notice it and return when you can. Do not turn distraction into a mistake. If the practice causes strong discomfort, stop; you can seek another form of pause or support suited to your situation.

Frequently asked question

Must I keep my eyes closed? No. Choose the option in which you feel comfortable and respect your own boundaries.
