Binding is the supreme «working» of Romanian folk witchcraft: a charm through which one person would supposedly be kept close to another against their will. From ancient forebears to TikTok, the subject has not grown old — but few subjects contain more suffering, fear and lost money.
How it is «performed» in tradition
The classic recipes: knots tied in a «red thread» while saying the name; hair or a photograph «worked on»; a drink with «a little powder»; knotted candles; a «tied handkerchief» buried beneath the threshold. Almost all contain the symbolism of binding (a knot, thread or strap) — the collective psyche has always understood that this is a «symbolic prison».
Why it «does not last» — tradition's own explanation
Even folklore, which believes in bindings, says that they do not produce love: they produce «tormented closeness». The bound person is «close, but without peace» — tense, obsessed, sometimes aggressive. When the «working comes undone» (or «turns back»), the relationship collapses badly. This is why serious witches (yes, there are hierarchies and «ethics» in the trade) refuse binding — or perform it at a high price and with warnings.
The real risks, here and now
- Financial fraud — the most common outcome: payment continues, but the result never comes;
- Psychological dependence — female clients who return for years;
- Harassment — the «bound person» sometimes becomes a dangerous stalker;
- Guilt and fear — the fear «that it has turned back on me» becomes a real disorder;
- Religious conflict — spiritually serious for believers.
The healthy alternative (also described by tradition)
- direct communication: ask for an honest conversation before any charm;
- Prayer for love: not «for X to return», but «if it is God's will» — the classic model of the Paraklesis;
- Working on yourself: most often, the wish to «bind» someone masks a fear of loneliness;
- Time: what is real remains without knots. What does not remain was not bound to anything good.
Frequently asked questions
A binding has been placed on me — how do I undo it? The Orthodox answer: confession, Holy Unction, holy water, Psalms 50 and 90. The psychological answer: cut contact with the «practitioner» and with fear. Combined, they almost always work.
I dreamed of someone «bound» to me — is it a sign? The dream reflects desire and fear, not a charm. A dream binds no one — otherwise there would be no free love left in the world.
