Manipulation: how you return to facts and to the real request

Cristina Balan Written byCristina Balan

You can recognize a manipulative conversation by noticing whether emotions or information are used to push you toward a choice you do not want. One isolated example does not establish a diagnosis; follow the context and the repetition.

When the discussion changes its subject

You asked a concrete question and you receive an attack on your character. You refused a request and you are told you do not love enough. The Forms of Manipulation material inventories guilt-tripping, the change of frame and presenting speculation as fact. Use these markers to keep your clarity, without assuming you know the other person's intimate intentions.

An exercise you can adapt

Note the initial question and the answer received. Return to the subject once: I want us to talk about this request. If repeated attacks appear, you can end the conversation. In a situation of abuse, seek support for safety.

Frequently asked question

If someone contradicts me, are they manipulating me? No. A disagreement can be honest; what matters is the way facts, boundaries and pressure are used.
