Throat chakra: signs it is blocked and how to unblock it (meditation included)

Cristina Balan Written byCristina Balan

In the livestream series where we worked on one chakra each evening, we reached the fifth: the throat chakra. I dressed in light blue, lit blue candles, and brought out crystals. And I must tell you from the start: crystals helped me more with this chakra than any other.

The throat chakra is my soul chakra. Throughout childhood I was silenced — I had an authoritarian mother and constantly heard ‘be quiet, be quiet’. I was a shy little girl, afraid of public speaking and expressing emotions. I remember, at fourteen in the countryside, after a full day working with several women, one said: ‘Do you realize this girl has not said a word all day?’ So I had every sign of a blocked chakra. I worked a great deal on my throat, and today I enjoy speaking — sometimes even too much. So I know this subject from both ends of the problem.

Below I explain what the throat chakra is, signs it is blocked or overactive, what I use to cleanse it, and the exercises we did together in livestreams — step by step.

What the throat chakra (Vishuddha) is

The throat chakra is the fifth chakra, located in the throat area. In Sanskrit, it is called Vishuddha, meaning purification. I began the series, as I should, from the bottom, with the root chakra, because you do not build a house from the upper floor. Each chakra has its element: Earth for the root, water for the sacral, fire for the solar plexus, air for the heart. For chakra 5, the element is ether.

Here is what you need to know:

  • Color: blue in several shades — from youthful, vibrant light blue to calm, harmonious blue.
  • Symbol: a circle with 16 petals, with a triangle inside the circle and another circle in its center. The higher we rise through the chakras, the more petals they have.
  • Frequency: 741 Hz. Here too, you see that the higher we rise, the higher the frequency.
  • Basic affirmation: ‘I speak. I express myself.’
  • Mantra: HAM.

The throat chakra is associated with communication, self-expression, truth, and creativity. For me, truth is life’s purpose. I realized this in a twelfth-grade philosophy class discussing fundamental values: one classmate said ‘goodness’, another ‘beauty’, and I said ‘truth’. In Sanskrit, truth is sat nam. Truth sometimes hurts, but cleanses enormously. An unspoken truth, however, creates many blockages.

And it is no coincidence the throat sits just above the heart. Energy rises through the channel from chakra to chakra. If the throat is blocked, you cannot open what lies above — the third eye and crown. The full chakra awakening does not happen.

Signs your throat chakra is blocked

A chakra can be underactive (blocked) or overactive (too open), and neither is good. When the throat chakra is blocked, the most frequent signs are:

  • You stay silent. You have a great deal to say but do not say it. You do not speak your truth or opinion. How many of us are like this?
  • You cannot say ‘no’. You say ‘yes’ although your body feels you do not want to — then wonder why you do not feel well.
  • Excessive shyness. You avoid conversations and fear others’ judgment.
  • A lump in the throat. You feel suffocated, as though something there holds you.
  • You remain in polite niceties. Better to speak an uncomfortable truth than remain in polite niceties. When you always take the middle ground to upset nobody, people sense vibrationally that you are not authentic.
  • You copy others in how you speak. You are not yourself.
  • ‘I stay silent to be accepted.’ I believe this is the greatest trauma associated with the throat chakra: people pleasing. You do not want to disturb anyone, so you stay silent to keep the peace. But then you tell the Universe others have the right to lead and you do not.

Many tell me they feel knots or pressure in the throat, cough, or often have sore throats. Please: if you have frequent throat pain, cervical-spine problems, or thyroid problems, see a doctor first. Chakra work can support you emotionally, but does not replace examination and treatment.

When the throat chakra is overactive

The opposite end is not good either:

  • Only you speak. You do not listen to others and interrupt them. Rest assured: you will have time to give your opinion.
  • You lack a filter — you speak and hurt. There is something to learn between being authentic and hurting people every time you open your mouth.
  • You impose your view verbally, in an authoritarian way.
  • Gossip, envy, jealousy. They are among the lowest vibrations. When you gossip, instead of focusing on yourself, you discuss what someone else did — and do not live your life. Usually it is not the one who has things who gossips, but the one standing on the sidelines.
  • You criticize without offering solutions. That is not expression, but fault-finding.
  • Aggressive or passive-aggressive communication, lying, manipulation — the ugliest forms. I wrote about these mechanisms in the article on manipulation techniques and how to recognize them.

There is another situation I often see: children their parents did not listen to become adults who chatter all day and suffer because nobody notices them. If you recognize yourself here, try reducing your quantity of words a little, and you will see people begin listening. There is a balance: neither too much silence nor being a ‘broken radio’.

For an overview of all seven, I wrote about the 7 signs of blocked chakras.

Why it matters to stop staying silent

I ask you from my heart: stop staying silent. I believe there is a cultural aspect here in Romania too — ‘be quiet, stay in your place’, a parent silencing a child. But silence does not protect you; it blocks you.

There are also jobs where speaking is the profession: salesperson, singer, public figure, anyone working with people. Some earn money through their voice — and for them a clean throat chakra is essential. Their gift lies there.

In my corporate career, I was very often the only one saying ‘no’. And that helped me advance: if everyone stayed silent and only I spoke, I had the floor. But on one condition — do not only criticize; bring a solution too. If you see something wrong, say it and propose an alternative.

And do not fear expressing yourself. Often saying something generates further ideas behind it. Expression is creativity.

What supports the throat chakra

Spirituality does not mean only courses. Simple things help enormously. Here is what I use for chakra 5:

  • Blue crystals. They worked best for me. I have a small blue-crystal pyramid — the pyramid shape channels energy very well. My stone is lapis lazuli: I have had a blue coat rack since sixteen, when I knew nothing about chakras, and while working on my throat I spontaneously wanted a silver lapis lazuli ring. I also love topaz.
  • Blue everywhere. Light-blue clothing, colored candles, decorations. I did not cleanse with blue food — I dislike blackberries — but with crystals and music.
  • Blue Lotus oil. It is one of the most beautiful scents in the world. It calms you and places you in a vibration of wisdom: you stop speaking carelessly. When I added a few drops to bathwater, it felt regal. Even the angriest people calm down with it. In the field, I also sensed mint as an oil for the throat.
  • Musk oil for cleansing. In the advanced-exercises livestream, I applied musk first, then Blue Lotus directly to the throat chakra. Find musk oil here, and for the atmosphere at home, I also leave you my oil-blend recipes for the diffuser.
  • Music and the 741 Hz frequency. My channel has a full chakra playlist. Sleeping with throat-chakra music is very gentle: while root-chakra music gives strength during sleep, throat music calms you through breathing and meditation.
  • The Tibetan bowl. I enjoy sound most for the throat chakra. I was very particular when choosing my bowls.
  • Drawing. You can do chakra calligraphy: draw them yourself with whatever is available. Drawing sacred symbols is also meditation.
  • The ‘candle’ yoga pose. You rise onto your shoulders with your legs upward. I did it every evening as a child, and you really feel release in the throat. If you have cervical-spine problems, do not do it without a doctor’s approval and an instructor.
  • Singing. When you sing, you express your voice — and cleanse the chakra. It is the best exercise. You used to sing as a child — especially if you were a girl — remember? Sing at home, in the shower, along the way. I walk down the street singing with headphones on and do not care about looks. People smoke calmly in the street and nobody is shocked, but if you begin singing, they think you are crazy. This very fear closes your voice.

The strongest approach I know is combining them: Tibetan bowl, crystal, oil, and meditation. Doing meditation alone is one thing; doing it with the bowl, oil, and crystal together is another. They do not have the same power. Find all essences for the seven chakras in the all-chakra collection.

Affirmations for the throat chakra

Say them aloud, not mentally. Spoken words have power:

  • ‘I speak. I express myself with clarity, confidence, and authenticity.’
  • ‘I express my creativity freely and without limits.’
  • ‘I have the right to be heard.’
  • ‘I express my truth.’
  • ‘I choose to speak my truth. I no longer stay silent.’

But be aware: self-confidence affirmations are pointless if you do not speak your truth in daily life. The affirmation is confirmed through words and deeds.

Quick exercise: light in the throat chakra

You can do it right now. Those with a Reiki hand send light into the chakra — but you can do it through consciousness too. The right hand has light: send light through it toward the throat chakra. Then sing.

Do not be frightened by what happens. You may begin yawning or burping — energetic burping, not from the stomach. It often happens to me when I sing and work on my throat. It signals energy circulating through the channel.

Advanced exercises for unblocking the throat chakra

In a second dedicated livestream, we did more intense cleansing for those who had already worked on their chakras. If you are new to the energy body, begin with the basic livestreams. Here are the steps:

  1. Prepare. The Tibetan bowl, oil (I applied musk, then Blue Lotus to the throat chakra), and a blue crystal if available.
  2. Close your eyes and bring your attention to the throat chakra. Spin it in the direction that comes naturally. To the left it cleanses; to the right it charges.
  3. Say: ‘I choose to speak my truth. I no longer stay silent. I allow myself to speak my truth, and my truth matters.’
  4. Give back unspoken words. Think of someone to whom you could not say what you needed to say. Visualize them and say mentally: ‘I give you back all the words I could not say because you silenced me.’ If this concerns a parent or a relationship involving abuse or manipulation and becomes too heavy, also work on it with a psychologist or psychotherapist.
  5. Ask: ‘I ask everything that is not truth to leave my throat chakra.’
  6. Breathe blue. Inhale blue energy through the nose and exhale through the mouth, removing all old energies from the throat chakra. Dissolve the ‘I stay silent to be accepted’ program.
  7. Bring light from above. Imagine blue light, the color of blue lotus, coming from above, and place it in the chakra’s center.
  8. Remove the knots. Some see knots, circles, even an X on the throat within the chakra. Someone in the livestream felt they removed barbed wire. In consciousness, imagine a knife and cut, pull out, undo — clean up. You can also make the hand gesture.
  9. Affirm: ‘I call back all my truth that I did not speak, and release it now. I cancel all programs through which I stay silent and fail to assert myself.’
  10. Raise energy from the root (if you have already worked on the chakras): place consciousness below in chakra 1, red, and raise it through the second, orange, solar plexus, yellow, heart, green, up to the throat. Spin them all, first left, then right. Where you feel blockage, cut.
  11. Receive. Imagine blue light bathing your whole body and say: ‘I activate all blue light codes within me.’ You cleansed; now receive. You should feel joy and a return to yourself.
  12. Meditate for five minutes on the bowl’s sound. Your voice matters — like the bowl’s sound reaching the Universe’s other end.
  13. Return gradually. Do not try to explain why and how. Do not intellectualize. Let the new energies settle gently.

What reactions may appear

During cleansing, people in the livestream said they yawned until tears came, burped continuously, felt heat, cold, hiccups, headaches, energetic shaking, or the need for the toilet. I even felt nauseated. If you need to spit, spit — do not swallow that energy again. These are frequent reactions in a chakra never worked on. But if a reaction is strong or does not pass, stop, rest, and seek a doctor’s advice.

The throat-chakra meditation: the steps

In the twelve-evening series livestream, we ended with a simple meditation:

  1. Close your eyes and bring consciousness down toward the throat chakra.
  2. Observe it: how large it is, whether it spins.
  3. Visualize it as a circle with sixteen petals, all blue, with a triangle inside.
  4. In the triangle’s center, imagine another circle, the color of topaz.
  5. Open your energy field and spin the chakra. In the livestream we continued with cleansing requested from the Pleiades — if you do not feel like traveling this way, simply remain and spin the chakra.
  6. Let it unite well with the heart chakra. Feel energy coming through the channel, through all chakras, to the throat.
  7. Smile and return. You can do this exercise with all chakras.

Frequently asked questions about the throat chakra

What is the throat chakra (chakra 5)?

The throat chakra, Vishuddha in Sanskrit — ‘purification’ — is the fifth chakra, in the throat area. It holds communication, self-expression, truth, and creativity. Its color is blue, element ether, symbol a sixteen-petaled circle, frequency 741 Hz, and mantra HAM.

How can I tell whether my throat chakra is blocked?

When blocked: you stay silent despite having much to say, cannot say ‘no’, are very shy, fear others’ judgment, remain in polite niceties, and feel a lump in the throat. When overactive: only you speak, interrupt, hurt without a filter, gossip, and criticize without solutions. For physical throat or thyroid symptoms, see a doctor.

How do I unblock the throat chakra?

Sing, speak, and tell your truth — with love. Use blue crystals (lapis lazuli, topaz), blue clothes and candles, 741 Hz music, the Tibetan bowl, and affirmations spoken aloud. For deeper cleansing, follow the advanced exercises: blue breathing, returning unspoken words, and removing chakra knots.

What essential oil supports the throat chakra?

I use Blue Lotus — I apply it directly to the throat chakra, in the bath, or for massage; it calms you and places you in a wisdom vibration. For cleansing, I use musk. I also sensed mint in the field.

What crystals support the throat chakra?

Blue crystals. My stone is lapis lazuli, and I love topaz. I also have a blue-crystal pyramid because the pyramid channels energy very well.

Is yawning or burping normal when working on the throat chakra?

Yes, yawning, burping, tears, cold, or heat are frequent cleansing reactions. Let them out; do not hold them in. If a reaction is strong or persists, stop and seek a doctor’s advice.

Your voice matters. Speak your truth, even today, even a little — with love and without fear. Sending you a kiss, and I look forward to seeing you at the next livestream.
