Sacral chakra (Svadhisthana): signs it is blocked and how to unblock it (meditation included)

Cristina Balan Written byCristina Balan

In the chakra livestream series, I began, as I should, with the root chakra — the foundation, safety and grounding. The second evening was devoted to the sacral chakra. And while preparing, I realized something: of all the chakras, this is the one I have worked on least. You know the saying about the shoemaker who wears worn-out shoes? Exactly that. When I scanned my chakras, the sacral was the smallest.

And I am not the only one. In working with people, I see a pattern here in Romania: the heart and solar plexus are large, while chakra 2 is very small. We grew up with the idea that pleasure is something to hide, that joy must be earned and that sexuality is not discussed. So let me say this from the outset: pleasure is not a sin. Let us talk about it kindly.

What the sacral chakra (Svadhisthana) is

The sacral chakra is the second of the seven main chakras. Its Sanskrit name, Svadhisthana, breaks down into two parts: sva — the self, what is personal — and adhisthana — dwelling, seat. Svadhisthana means the home of the self. If at the root chakra the soul has just landed and says ‘I am safe’, here the second affirmation is ‘I am’. If you do not even feel your own existence, you have work to do on chakra 2.

  • Where it is: below the navel, a little lower down, at the level of the reproductive organs. For women, it is easiest to locate: between the two ovaries.
  • Color: orange — orange, saffron.
  • Element: water — movement, adaptability, emotions.
  • Symbol: a lotus with six petals, like a hexagon, with two circles in the middle, one inside the other.
  • Mantra: VAM.
  • Frequency: 417 Hz (the root chakra was 396 Hz; we are moving up in vibration).

The sacral chakra is our emotional, creative, sensory and sexual center. It relates to pleasure, fun, freedom, flexibility, relationships with others — and money. The energy of money is an energy of flow: money needs to circulate, not remain blocked. In the chakra tradition, the sacral is also associated with the reproductive organs, bladder, kidneys, adrenal glands and lower back. If you have physical problems in this area, see a doctor first — energy work can support you emotionally, but does not replace treatment.

There is a beautiful connection between the root and sacral chakras: the root chakra provides the energy, and the sacral chakra expresses it. Like a plant: first the soil and seed, then the water — and only then do we grow. Earth with water: that is where creation happens.

Emotions are energy in motion

The sacral chakra governs our inner emotional world. Emotions are energy in motion. When they are dysregulated, it shows in two ways: either you are overly emotional and pulled in every direction, or you have moved into your mind or disconnected because of trauma — and no longer feel anything. But one characteristic of being human is feeling, even when it hurts.

If you are an empath, you have an enormous amount of work to do on the sacral chakra. You feel everything more intensely than the average person around you, so you become attached easily and go in every direction at once. It was very difficult for me, and looking back, I should have worked here earlier.

When chakra 2 is balanced, you live in harmony with your emotions without being overwhelmed by them. You can state your point of view even if it differs from everyone else’s — and continue the conversation without exploding. And remember: nobody dies because you said what you feel. Just learn to discern whom you open up to. If someone betrayed you or laughed at you after you opened your heart, that shame does not belong to you.

Signs that the sacral chakra is blocked or overactive

A chakra should be neither blocked nor overactive — both are imbalances. We work on it to cleanse it, expand it and bring it into balance.

When chakra 2 is blocked (underactive)

  • You have no ideas anymore. None at all. I also had a period when I wanted something, but nothing came to mind.
  • You feel stuck in life, lifeless, without enthusiasm or motivation.
  • You lose pleasure and desire, or feel guilty about your desires.
  • You repress your emotions and find it difficult to open up to others, out of fear of rejection or lack of self-confidence.
  • You are ashamed of your own body. A simple test: if you are alone at home and feel embarrassed to look in the mirror without clothes — or if intimacy is only possible with the lights off — you have work to do here.

I experienced blocked creativity myself. I worked in finance for more than ten years, and in childhood I was told that I painted badly — and grew up believing it. When I began cleansing myself, I discovered I was an artist. My soul had art within it; it simply was not allowed to come out. God did not make us all the same: if He wanted everyone identical, He would have made just one.

When chakra 2 is overactive

  • You are hyper-emotional: you cry, shout, everything explodes.
  • Addiction to pleasures: eating nonstop, all kinds of addictions, or an obsession with sexuality.
  • A constant need for attention and external validation, along with extreme sensitivity to criticism.
  • Excessive attachment: you know the relationship is toxic, but cannot leave it.
  • Jealousy, possessiveness, control — you feel as though you will die if you do not control things.
  • Difficulty setting healthy boundaries.

If you think tiredness, feeling unwell, or digestive or menstrual problems might be ‘because of the chakra’, please see a doctor first. Chakra work goes alongside a checkup, not in its place. For an overview of all the centers, I wrote about the 7 signs of blocked chakras.

Your body, shame and boundaries

I worked intensively for two years, from 2022 to 2024, on accepting my body and sexuality. Shame is a very low energy, and we hold it in the body. Here, we work gently: these are intimate matters, and you do not force your way into them.

Throughout childhood, I was told I was fat — and only later understood that my mother was projecting how she saw herself onto me. The child internalizes being ugly, being worthless. If something similar happened to you, place your hand over your heart and say: ‘Dear mother (or the person who said it to you), all the shame you projected onto my body does not belong to me. I give it back to you with love.’

Then speak to your body:

‘Dear body, I accept you as you are. I love you, and I am sorry I did not respect your needs, did not hear you. I lived so much in my mind. Thank you.’

Stop comparing yourself. You cannot be blonde, red-haired and brunette at the same time. As you have incarnated, you are perfect for what you have to do in this life. And if you make yourself beautiful, do it first for yourself: you bloom because you bloom, not for someone’s validation.

This is also where boundaries begin. When you are not in touch with your body, what boundaries can you have with others? I, for example, do not hug and kiss just anyone — I am very sensitive to touch. I would rather seem cold than burden my field. If you are an empath, boundaries are essential. As I say: my body is my castle.

If you have experienced abuse, in childhood or as an adult, work very slowly. You can start by sleeping with a sacral chakra playlist playing, so that the energies settle gently. But these difficult issues are worked on individually, not in a group: also seek a psychologist or psychotherapist specializing in trauma. Energy work goes hand in hand with therapy, not in its place.

The programs you dissolve in chakra 2

In the dedicated livestream, we worked with programs. You say them aloud, observe where you feel them in the body and let them go. The formula:

‘I dissolve the program […] in love and light, from all times, spaces, dimensions and beyond them.’

Here are some of them:

  • ‘I am not creative.’ Replace it with: ‘I am creative. I open myself to creativity.’ If your mind becomes frightened, speak gently to it: ‘Dear mind, thank you for helping me get this far. Please make room for something unknown. I am safe.’
  • ‘I am ashamed of my body’ and ‘I am ugly.’ Replace them with: ‘I am beautiful as I am.’
  • ‘Love must be earned’ — especially if childhood love was conditional. Replace it with: ‘Love can be unconditional. I can love myself unconditionally.’
  • ‘If I am feminine and sexy, I am not a woman of worth.’ You can be feminine, you can be sexy, and you can be perfectly fine. Being a woman does not mean expressing yourself on just one vibration.
  • ‘In our family, we do not talk about sexuality.’ When we do not discuss it, children learn from the internet. Change it to: ‘We can communicate; we are adults.’
  • ‘I am too inhibited and do not express my needs.’ Change it to: ‘I know how to express my needs in a healthy way.’ Being an adult means being able to speak.
  • ‘I deny you closeness to punish you.’ That is not how adults resolve things. Love and money should not be tied to intimacy, and this kind of blackmail is very toxic.

And one more thing: creativity is not only for work. You can allow yourself to be creative in your intimate life too.

Release practices: calling your energy back

When working on chakra 2, you call your energy back. Close your eyes and feel it coming:

‘I draw all my sexual energy back from all my partners. My energy belongs to me and me alone. I do not allow anyone to manipulate me or steal my energy. I am sovereign over my energy.’

‘I cancel all soul contracts through which I gave away my sexual energy. I call all my sexual energy back.’

‘I send back all spells, hexes and attacks placed on my sacral chakra.’

‘My energy is my gift from God, and I no longer give it to anyone.’

Then release the energetic ties to former partners and seal them in love. A fulfilling relationship comes more easily after you have made peace with what came before. Do not run from one relationship to another: otherwise you project emotions from one person onto the next. Take time to be with yourself.

Expect reactions: when you work here, you may burp, yawn, cry or tremble. I burped through an entire sacral chakra livestream. On the same subject, I wrote in more detail about release practices for love and sexuality.

Activation phrases

After cleansing, you charge it. Say the phrases aloud and spin the chakra as you say them:

‘I activate my sacral chakra to the maximum level that can be activated now.’

And then, one at a time: my creativity; the healthy flow of my emotions and the ability to feel them safely; the joy of living; the ability to experience pleasure in balance; my authentic sensuality; my sacred femininity, my magnetism and natural charm; full acceptance of my body; fluidity and the ability to flow with life — this is for those who control things. Do not take all of them on in a single session. Choose one or two and work with them until you feel something has shifted. And spin your chakras daily, as you brush your teeth.

What supports the sacral chakra

Chakra 2 is feminine energy, so you work on it gently.

  • Orange. In clothing, around the house, in decor. I made some simple paintings, just squares of color — a completely different kind of decoration.
  • Orange foods: oranges, mangoes, clementines, papayas, peaches, apricots, carrots, sweet potatoes and pumpkins. And spices: turmeric, saffron, cinnamon, vanilla and ginger. When you add spices, food has a different vibration.
  • Water. Drink plenty of water and teas; in the Ayurvedic system you can find many for this chakra. Take relaxing baths; meditate beside a river or the sea.
  • Crystals: carnelian is the emblematic stone of the sacral chakra — creativity, confidence, passion. Then moonstone (it is not orange, but has the same feminine vibration), amber — light and inner warmth — and orange calcite. You can put them in the bath, beside you in bed, or wear them as jewelry. You can also make charged water by placing the stone in water — first check, however, whether your stone can be placed in water.
  • Essential oils: sandalwood — connection and fulfillment; I put it in the diffuser, mixed with jasmine, and it fills the house —, ylang-ylang, sweet orange — imagine a house that smells of oranges —, cinnamon and vanilla — gentleness and safety. Use them in a diffuser, in massage, in the bath or directly on the chakra. Choose genuine, quality oils. You can find ylang-ylang oil in the shop here. For difficult release work on chakra 2, I work with musk — apply it, diluted, where it hurts, or pour it over yourself in your awareness, like a rain of musk. Musk oil is powerful; use it in moderation.
  • The chakra 2 bath: water, purification salt, a few drops of sandalwood oil, orange candles, two or three crystals and the lights off. Stay there and ‘soak’ — you emerge a different person. It works wonderfully for children too.
  • Sound: music at 417 Hz and the mantra VAM. I have playlists for every chakra on my YouTube channel.
  • Movement and dance. You need to become water, to be in motion. You can also look for yoga poses for the sacral chakra.
  • Creative activities: dance, painting, writing, play. The inner child and soul want creativity — our nature is to create. I wrote about bringing the inner child back into play in the guide to healing the inner child.
  • Discover what you actually want. The main function of chakra 2 is regulating emotions and desires. We often do not express our true desires because they have been repressed. One day, my daughter insisted we go to a hypermarket for juice — in fact, she wanted some collectible cards she had seen at a friend’s house. We adults do the same. I recommend the emotional release technique through tapping (EFT), about which I have a video on my channel.

And what do you do with guilt and shame? They are low vibrations resting on a lie. Accept yourself as you are: change begins with acceptance. Basic needs are the base of the pyramid; if you do not fulfill them, how do you expect to rise?

Sacral chakra meditation: the steps

At the end of the livestream, we did the chakra 2 meditation together. You can also do it at home:

  1. Sit comfortably, breathe and close your eyes. Bring your attention below your navel.
  2. Visualize the chakra: orange, round, with six petals and two circles in the middle. Perhaps this is the first time you have connected to this energy — perhaps you feel a current in your body.
  3. Tell yourself: ‘You are perfect as you are’, just like the round circles at the center of the chakra. If you feel like touching your body, do so.
  4. Acknowledge its intelligence. The chakra knows better; place yourself in its hands.
  5. Spin the chakra, to the right, to the left — see what it needs. Do not rush.
  6. Let it connect with the root chakra and move them together. The root provides the energy; the sacral expresses it.
  7. Let a desire emerge from the subconscious that you have not fulfilled. Do not judge it: it is a part of you that wants to express itself.
  8. Let the orange energy radiate from chakra 2 throughout your body, into every cell: energy of creativity, of permission. You allow yourself to exist — with the scent of orange.
  9. Notice whether any part of your body hurts. Perhaps that energy was missing there. Let the orange current reach that place too and nourish the other chakras as well.
  10. Remember: it is your divine right to fulfill your needs, without judgment, without guilt, with joy. Let your gifts spring from within you — there is nobody like you in this world.
  11. You are safe, and the energy of life supports you. Release the barriers, join the dance of life, then return slowly.

Frequently asked questions about the sacral chakra

What is the sacral chakra (chakra 2)?

The sacral chakra, Svadhisthana in Sanskrit, is the second main chakra. Its name means ‘the home of the self’. It is below the navel, at the level of the reproductive organs, is orange, has water as its element, a six-petaled lotus, the mantra VAM and the frequency 417 Hz. It holds emotions, pleasure, creativity, sexuality and relationships.

How do I know whether my sacral chakra is blocked?

When it is blocked: you have no ideas anymore, feel lifeless and unmotivated, have lost pleasure, repress your emotions and feel ashamed of your body. When it is overactive: you are hyper-emotional, have addictions, constantly seek validation, become excessively attached, are jealous or control things. Both are imbalances.

How do I unblock the sacral chakra?

Dissolve the programs that hold you back (‘I am not creative’, shame about your body), call your energy back through release practices and say the activation phrases while spinning the chakra. Support yourself with orange, water, dance, music at 417 Hz and the meditation above. Daily and gently — not in one day.

Which crystals and oils are good for the sacral chakra?

Crystals: carnelian, the emblematic stone, then moonstone, amber and orange calcite. Oils: sandalwood, ylang-ylang, sweet orange, cinnamon and vanilla, in a diffuser, in massage, in the bath or on the chakra. For more difficult release work, diluted musk.

Why is the sacral chakra important for empaths?

Because it regulates emotions. Empaths feel everything more intensely, become attached easily and lose themselves in other people’s emotions. A balanced chakra 2 helps you feel without being overwhelmed and set healthy boundaries.

I hope you allow yourself to feel, create and enjoy life again. You have the right to create and the right to exist — it is okay to fulfill your needs. Kisses, and I look forward to seeing you at the next livestream.
