Crown chakra: signs it is closed and how to open it

Cristina Balan Written byCristina Balan

In the livestream series where we worked on one chakra each evening, we reached the top of the head: the crown chakra. While preparing the livestream with crown-chakra music in the background, quiet settled in my soul. That is actually chakra 7: quiet, peace, and connection with the divine. Through it, we connect with God, the Source, and our own soul — because the soul is also part of the Source.

Below I explain what the crown chakra is, signs it is closed or, conversely, overactive, what supports it, and the meditation we did together in the livestream, step by step.

What the crown chakra (Sahasrara) is

The crown chakra is the seventh chakra in the classical system and lies at the top of the head. Its Sanskrit name, Sahasrara, means ‘a thousand petals’. It is usually described as a thousand-petaled lotus flower. In my experience, you may indeed see it that way initially — but actually there are a thousand lotus flowers, with many sections. I activated it about two years ago, more easily than the third eye, especially with violet and sounds. And then I understood there are infinite things to discover here.

The crown chakra is associated with:

  • connection with the divine and access to universal consciousness;
  • enlightenment and divine wisdom;
  • inner peace and harmony — the ego yields its place to quiet;
  • clarity — you see where things are going;
  • gratitude.

Its color is violet in every shade, from light to dark — and white. The associated sound frequency is 963 Hz, and the mantra is AUM. Traditionally, it is linked to the pineal gland, as is the third eye.

Something I learned in Thailand: among Buddhists there, touching someone’s head is frowned upon. In Romania, stroking the head is a beautiful gesture. But it is true that when your crown chakra is very active, you feel it in the etheric field like a crown communicating with the whole Universe. So if you visit Thailand, do not touch people’s heads.

Enlightenment does not happen only once

The crown chakra is also called the enlightenment chakra. And I tell you honestly: the vast majority of people have it closed — even some whose third eye is open.

I do not believe enlightenment happens once and that is it. You become enlightened at one level, then another, then another. There are thresholds. The spiritual path is an infinite spiral because God is infinite. So do not chase the thought ‘that is it, I resolved it, it is finished’. That is the mind.

Why do we seek spirituality? Because you too are part of God. We moved away from the Source to know ourselves and experience — and the further from the Source, the unhappier you are. I had many moments of connection with the divine and spiritual ecstasy. In one, no need remained: all were fulfilled, conscious and unconscious alike.

And when you reach the level where all chakras are activated, including the crown, there is nothing left to say: everything is clear. It is a level words cannot explain. That is why I tell you something you will return to someday: silence is the deepest language.

The crown chakra’s challenge: the mind

On the path of spiritual ascent, you will have many internal tests, and the first comes from the mind. Thresholds in the head are like locked gates. The mind wants everything to make sense, but the Universe is infinite.

What do these thresholds look like? You begin working on yourself, and the ego says: ‘Are you crazy?’ Then it inserts fear. When you begin accessing greater consciousness, the psyche — a small piece of an enormous universal computer — fears disintegration and death. The truth is it transforms. Both mind and ego change because you become something else. The next threshold: ‘I am losing my mind.’ In fear, the psyche tries pulling you back into everyday reality.

And the further you advance, the more creative the ego becomes to survive: it produces arguments and justifications for not going further. But the impulse to seek spirituality comes from the soul. The soul wants you to return to what you really are: divine essence, light. And its voice is very quiet — it comes through vibration and energy. That is why meditation is absolutely necessary.

If you feel overwhelmed along the way or feel you are losing balance, stop, ground yourself, and seek help from a psychologist or psychotherapist. Spiritual work goes hand in hand with specialist support, not instead of it.

Signs the crown chakra is unbalanced

Like any chakra, the crown can be underactive (closed) or overactive (too open). Neither is good.

When the crown chakra is underactive

  • You do not know your soul’s path. You wander right and left and complain.
  • You have no inspiration. You are apathetic and only want sleep.
  • You feel disconnected — from yourself and the Universe.
  • You have no purpose in life.
  • Fatigue, much sleep, exhaustion. Sometimes the body shows you this way that something is not circulating. But if you have frequent headaches or persistent fatigue, see a doctor first: chakra work can support you but does not replace examination.

I want to pause briefly on purpose. Better a concrete purpose than none: work toward a home and food for your children. Manifest here because you live here. Then, after resolving this part through the lower chakras, seek your soul’s purpose. And that purpose shows in your qualities and gifts — which is why discovering your true self matters, rather than the mask built to please mother or father. I worked in finance, but actually I am an artist: I was at the exact opposite. And do not compare your purpose with others’. Purposes also change because life comes in waves.

When the crown chakra is overactive

  • Spiritual ego and cynicism. You have knowledge and a certain level and begin looking down on others.
  • You feel spiritually superior. There will always be people above and below you, and ‘more’ or ‘less’ is a mental matter. Everything is round, we all belong to a whole, and each nourishes the tree of life with their experience. An ordinary person on the street has experiences in no way inferior to a multibillionaire’s.
  • You judge. Whenever you turn outward to judge others, it is about you. And when you judge, you do not receive the gifts.
  • Excessive dependence on spirituality. People disconnect from reality, are ‘up in the clouds’, and can no longer act on this plane. We return toward the Source but remember we are here and live here.
  • You feel overwhelmed by so much spirituality and knowledge. The solution is to take it in small pieces, step by step. Everyone has their path; all roads lead to Rome.

The crown needs the root

For people with an overactive crown, as with the third eye, there is one answer: grounding, grounding, and more grounding. The moment you feel you rise too quickly, ground yourself. I learned these things alone, and if I did them again now, I would alternate ascent, grounding, ascent, grounding — like walking: one foot, then the other. If you only pursue spirituality without grounding, it is like decorating before the cement sets: everything falls.

I began the series from the bottom, with the root chakra, for precisely this reason. A good exercise from other livestreams: with soles on the Earth, lower a thread from the root chakra to the Earth’s center; then open the crown and raise a channel through all chakras, upward to God. Let the flow pass through you: heaven into Earth, Earth into heaven.

Gratitude, the first step

When working on the crown chakra, we develop gratitude a great deal: I am content with what I have and thank God, the Universe, myself, and those around me. This is a first step in manifestation because you cannot manifest if you are not content.

Your life is beautiful and has many good things. But the mind searches and searches and forgets to thank. And unhappiness often comes from ‘I want, I want’. This wheel of desires is like a rat race: it leads nowhere. True happiness comes when you center yourself with yourself and your soul. You can be the poorest person on Earth and be content. It does not mean disconnecting from the material world — only that it is not the sole reality.

Sometimes, looking at my cat and how proud and beautiful she is, I say: ‘Thank you for existing in my life.’ Being content with what you have is one of the highest vibrations — and attracts abundance. We all have lessons, and the only thing that can change them is your inner state and perspective on what happens.

What supports the crown chakra

  • Violet and white. I wore a violet skirt in the livestream and, through chakra work, realized what my wardrobe lacked. Clothing, decorations, lights in violet and white. The store also offers the lilac candle from the crown-chakra collection.
  • The violet flame. You can find many violet-flame videos on YouTube. I listened to them in the background as music, and they truly cleanse and help.
  • The 963 Hz frequency. It is very calming. On the livestream day, I wrote the site article with it playing and did not feel I was working — I was in quiet and calm. I recommend letting the chakra playlists play at home.
  • The AUM mantra. Begin meditation with one AUM or three. Lean against the backrest with your spine straight, or sit in lotus pose. When you say AUM, energy rises from the root upward, and at ‘M’ your whole head vibrates.
  • Essential oils: lavender, sandalwood, cedar. You can diffuse them at home, apply them to the body, and use them for massage or a bath. For example, find sandalwood in the store.
  • Crystals: amethyst and quartz. Amethyst is the mother of all crystals for the upper chakras and easy to find. Bathe with them, keep them in bed, sit with them, speak to them. Seriously: they are alive; you only need to connect with their vibration. You can wear them as jewelry too.
  • Violet foods: plums (prune and perje), eggplants, beetroot, blackberries, dark grapes, blueberries, a little lavender. Also cacao, which has a very high vibration.
  • Yoga. I was not interested in such things at all, but have practiced yoga for three years, and it is the sport that suits me. It is spiritual exercise: it aligns you with your energies and raises your vibration. Lotus remains the simplest pose, and there are many crown-chakra mudras.

Prayer, the most direct connection

For me, prayer comes first, both for chakra 7 and all energetic work. You connect with God above and pray sincerely, as humbly as you can, in your own way. You do not need an intermediary with God: you need Him like air. I recommend the Lord’s Prayer and Psalm 101, but since childhood I mostly pray in my own words. God does not wait for formulas; He waits for the heart.

A phrase I love: ‘Lord, please help me cleanse myself and settle on my soul’s path.’ And if you feel you need to cleanse your connection with heaven, say: ‘I cancel all spells on my connection with God and the divine’, and work with the release practices in the store. In another livestream, I used a white candle passed around the body for aura cleansing; in the store, find the white Conexiunea sufletului candle.

Affirmations for the crown chakra

At some point, affirmations need to emerge from you. Until then, you can repeat these:

  • ‘God is within me.’
  • ‘I am open to new ideas. Everything I need comes to me.’
  • ‘I am guided and part of a higher force.’
  • ‘There is no separation between God and me. I am connected to the Source.’
  • ‘I am in harmony with my soul and live my soul’s path.’
  • ‘My spirit is calm, open, and wise.’
  • ‘I leave all attachments behind. I open to the Universe.’
  • ‘I am open to enlightenment and spiritual growth.’
  • ‘I live in peace with myself and the Universe.’
  • ‘I am a channel through which the divine expresses itself.’

I received the last one just a day before the livestream, with a message: your only job is to cleanse this channel so God can express Himself through you. We were never severed from the Source. This world gives the illusion of separation: one is white, another black, one this way, another that way. But we are all one — aspects of the divine.

The crown-opening meditation: the steps

At the livestream’s end, we did the meditation together. You can do it at home too:

  1. Calm yourself, close your eyes, and center yourself. Place your hands on your chest in humility.
  2. Chant AUM three times. With every inhalation, draw energy from below, from the root chakra, and raise it to the crown.
  3. Lower your hands onto your legs, palms toward the sky, and straighten up.
  4. Raise energy through the chakras. Feel it rising from the root to the sacral, then reaching chakra 3. Spin chakra 3 and let it overflow toward the heart. The flow passes through the throat and third eye like a mountain torrent rising and spinning all chakras. Increase the speed.
  5. Imagine a string of pearls. From the edge of the forehead, energy passes through a string of pearls forming a spiral to the crown. Keep spinning the lower chakras and let energy pass through every pearl, bead by bead. You bring vital energy to parts you may never have worked on.
  6. Cleanse every pearl and advance in a spiral toward the head’s center. Some may blossom like a lotus flower. Let what comes overwhelm you — you are safe. Perhaps today you discover subtle spaces of your consciousness for the first time. You are home, in God’s field. There is no separation between you and God.
  7. Receive violet light from above. Let it enter in the reverse direction, top to bottom, and let everything old flow out.
  8. Open your heart wide to this energy because it is your soul’s energy. You are safe.
  9. Connect head and heart. Allow the field to work on you and create new paths between mind and heart through the spinal channel so energy from above reaches the base. You are light — and the more light you become, the more easily light passes through you.
  10. Feel peace. Perhaps you missed it or have not felt it for a long time. Being in this state of peace, love, and harmony is your divine right.
  11. Make an infinity figure eight between heart and head. Love rises from heart to head; wisdom descends from head to heart. Nourish your heart with high vibrations and send love from the heart.
  12. Return slowly when you can.

This is our natural state. Return to it as often as possible, and work on the heart–head connection through the infinity eight: circulating energy nourishes. What comes from above has a higher vibration — do not fear letting it flow. Work on what comes from below step by step.

Frequently asked questions about the crown chakra

What is the crown chakra and where is it?

The crown chakra (Sahasrara) is the seventh chakra at the top of the head. Its name means ‘a thousand petals’. It is the center of connection with the divine, enlightenment, wisdom, and inner peace. Its colors are violet and white, associated frequency 963 Hz, and mantra AUM.

How can I tell whether my crown chakra is closed?

When underactive: you do not know your path, lack inspiration and purpose, are apathetic, only want sleep, and feel disconnected from yourself and the Universe. When overactive: spiritual ego, judgment, a sense of superiority, disconnection from reality. Both are imbalances.

How do I open the crown chakra?

Through prayer in your own way and meditation: begin with three AUMs, raise energy through all chakras, pass it through the string of pearls to the crown, receive violet light from above, and connect heart and head. Support the work with affirmations, 963 Hz, violet and white, gratitude, and grounding.

What essential oil supports the crown chakra?

In the livestream, I recommended lavender, sandalwood, and cedar. You can diffuse them at home, apply them to the body, and use them for massage or a bath.

What crystals support chakra 7?

Amethyst, the mother of all crystals for upper chakras, and quartz. You can bathe with them, keep them in bed, or wear them as jewelry.

Can the crown chakra be too open?

Yes. Then spiritual ego, judgment, and disconnection from reality appear: you are ‘up in the clouds’ and cannot act here anymore. The solution is grounding — one ascent, one grounding, like walking.

We return toward the Source but remember we are here and live here. Meditate, give thanks for what you have, and let silence speak to you. Sending you a kiss, and I look forward to seeing you at the next livestream.
