Psalm 92: meaning, prayer and full text

Why read Psalm 92?

Psalm 92 offers reassurance when the world seems unstable. Its image of mighty waters is set alongside God's greater strength and the holiness of His house.

You can read this psalm when its themes speak to your circumstances, or as part of your regular reading of the Psalter. This explanation draws on the text itself; the psalm is not reserved for one particular need.

The full text of Psalm 92 (7 verses), from the 13th Kathisma of the Psalter. The opening words — «The Lord became King, He clothed Himself...» — are also the psalm’s traditional “name”: our grandmothers did not say “psalm 92”, but called it by its first words.

The text of Psalm 92

1. The Lord became King, He clothed Himself in splendour; the Lord clothed Himself in strength and girded Himself,

2. For He established the world, which will not be shaken.

3. Your throne has been ready since then; You are from eternity.

4. The rivers lifted up, O Lord, the rivers lifted up their voices,

5. The rivers lifted up their waves; but more than the voice of the surging waters,

6. More than the incomparable turmoil of the sea, wonderful is the Lord on high.

7. Your testimonies have been fully confirmed. Holiness befits Your house, O Lord, for length of days.
