Kundalini: what kundalini energy is and how to prepare for its awakening (Meditation included)

Cristina Balan Written byCristina Balan

Kundalini is the energy we all have within us. I see it as a serpent — an energetic serpent and, at the same time, a serpent of consciousness — resting low down in the root chakra. Some people also experience kundalini awakenings when going through spiritual awakening.

I know the subject is fashionable and many people want to ‘activate’ their kundalini as quickly as possible. That is why I want to tell you from the start something I keep repeating: do not force it. Kundalini is not a toy. First you prepare your energy body, cleanse your chakras, and work through your trauma — only then does the energy have a path through which to rise.

Below I explain what kundalini energy is, how it flows through the body, why a forced awakening can destabilize you, and give you the steps of the cleansing meditation we did together in a dedicated livestream.

What is kundalini?

Of all traditions, Hinduism knows the most about the energy body. I love Hinduism, have taken a great interest in this aspect, and practice yoga. And at the foundation of the energy body lies kundalini. It can actually be visualized as a serpent — hence the expression ‘the kundalini serpent’.

Kundalini is your vital energy. It rests coiled in the root chakra, at the base of the spine, in the pelvic area. I wrote at length about this first chakra in the article on the root chakra, grounding, and release practices — it is the foundation that supports everything that follows.

How kundalini energy rises: Ida, Pingala, and Sushumna

Three main channels pass through the energy body:

  • Sushumna — the central channel, rising through the seven main chakras.
  • Ida and Pingala — the two side channels, intertwining like the two serpents on the caduceus of Hermes.

At first, the energy flows through the two side channels. But the more you work — yoga, meditation, energy work, the chakras, trauma, psychotherapy — the more you unblock the central chakra system. The aim is to work on and align your chakras so kundalini can pass through them along the central channel.

When the chakras have been worked on, kundalini energy can rise all the way up to God, descend to the center of the earth, and return to you. It starts in the pelvis and first rises into the second chakra. If it is blocked there, it stops there. And so on, at each chakra.

That is why, before any awakening, the right question is a different one: where has your serpent stopped? For the overall picture, I also offer you the article on the 7 signs of blocked chakras.

Kundalini awakening: why you must not force it

Everyone who works seriously with energy warns you: do not forcibly activate your kundalini. And that is right. Some yogis work for decades to awaken their kundalini.

A wave of energy or a ‘discharge’ does not mean a kundalini awakening. But if your kundalini truly awakens when you are not ready and you carry much unresolved trauma, it can throw you seriously off balance. Spirituality and revelation cannot be forced. It is not ‘come on, snap, done’. It is an infinite path from the self towards the self.

What truly helps you:

  • Work on your chakras. The body is like a temple, a divine architecture — and it needs work.
  • Work through your trauma. Activating kundalini is pointless if the blocks are higher up in the chakras. If you do not undertake psychotherapy and work on yourself, the energy has nowhere to pass through.
  • Listen to your intuition. It is already telling you what to do and how.
  • Do not rush. If your serpent has not even awakened, it means you are not ready yet. And that is all right.

Please: if you have intense physical or psychological symptoms — dizziness that does not pass, insomnia, anxiety, panic states, or the feeling that you are no longer yourself — see a doctor or psychologist. Energy work can support you but does not replace an examination and treatment.

How it was for me

I did two years of intense work, from morning until evening, focused solely on spirituality. When kundalini rose in me, it was so intense that I searched half the internet to understand what was happening to me. Only afterwards did I realize that what I was experiencing was real.

Some time ago I also practiced kundalini yoga, and in one session I saw traumatic events from the period when I was in my mother’s womb. That is how I understood how deeply these practices can go — and why they must be done with care.

Breathing: pranayama

Breathing is essential in spirituality. Depending on how you breathe, you settle into exactly where you need to be. A simple pranayama exercise:

  1. Block your left nostril with your finger.
  2. Inhale through the right, exhale through the left. Do a series of ten.
  3. Feel how the right side of your body fills with air.
  4. Then do the same on the other side.

Preparation: the zero point and the observer

Before the meditation, I will explain how I work. Everything begins at the zero point: a balance in which everything at the extremes is brought to zero. Only from there can you be an observer. The mind does not arrive with its stories — you work without the mind, as an observer, pure consciousness.

And there is something else: your attention creates. When your attention constantly goes towards what is bad, you will have more bad things in your life, because through your consciousness you tell the universe: ‘this is my choice’. When you choose to observe something beautiful, more beautiful things will happen. A large part of the spiritual awakening path consists of clearing the subconscious so you can manifest from a clean place.

The longer you keep your consciousness on something, the deeper you go and the subtler the energies you feel.

The kundalini cleansing and activation meditation: the steps

We usually do release practices quickly. But you can take two or three sentences and meditate on them. One does not prevent the other: it is good to do them both quickly and slowly. In the livestream we combined meditation and cleansing. Here are the steps:

  1. Get into position. Relaxed on the bed or in the lotus position. What matters is feeling comfortable with yourself. Close your eyes.
  2. Call your energy back. People with bad intentions sometimes take some of your energy. Say: ‘May all my kundalini energy return to me, from all times and spaces, lives and dimensions.’
  3. Visualize your energy body. Become aware of the energies in each part of your body: where it feels heavier, where it feels lighter. Simply observe.
  4. Go down to the root chakra. Kundalini, your vital energy, rests there. Send white light and black light towards the serpent and awaken it.
  5. Move up into the second chakra. If the energy has stopped there, work on the chakra: spin it, align it, and pour etheric musk over it to cleanse it.
  6. Say: ‘I ask the divine feminine to activate my second chakra to the maximum level that can be activated now.’
  7. Say: ‘I ask all my chakras to activate to the maximum level that can be activated now.’
  8. Say: ‘I activate my kundalini energy to the maximum level that can be activated now.’ Then remain in silence. True spirituality is in silence.
  9. Affirm: ‘I exist. I am. I feel.’ Imagine that your only organ of perception were the second chakra. What would it be like to become an antenna for the universe through the second chakra alone? This is a good exercise to do again.
  10. Say: ‘I cancel all blocks on my chakras and alchemically transform them into spiritual strength for myself.’
  11. Say: ‘I cancel all viruses, beings, and entities in my chakras, send them back where they came from, and free the chakra system from unwanted visitors. My chakras belong to me and me alone, and I do not allow anyone to affect them.’
  12. Cleanse the third eye. Put a little musk on the third eye and send light into the chakra. Do this with any chakra. The third eye needs regular work.
  13. Cleanse the throat. At the throat, I first apply musk or Mix Protecție; Blue Lotus comes afterwards, more for developing the chakra. Say: ‘I cancel the pattern “Be quiet, people will laugh at you”. I cancel the pattern “Be quiet, what will the neighbors say”. I cancel the pattern “Shut your mouth”.’ In sessions I very often see people who do not speak their truth or opinions so as not to disturb others.
  14. Observe where your serpent has stopped. Do not become agitated or force it. Wherever it stopped, that is where you have work to do.
  15. Move the energy through your body. Where is there more, where is there less? What matters is that the energy flows.
  16. The musk bath. Imagine you are in a barrel of etheric musk and let all the filth, everything heavy, flow out of you.
  17. Free yourself and return. Become more aware of your energy body, your spiritual body, and let yourself be free.

You can find musk oil here, and if you want it together with Mix Protecție, there is the Musc + Mix Protecție duo.

What reactions may occur during energy cleansing?

If you feel like burping or yawning during the meditation, that is all right — it is energy cleansing. If you feel warm, that is normal. People in the livestream felt energy stopping in different areas: the head, solar plexus, neck, or stomach. Some felt dizzy because it was a strong cleansing.

If a reaction is intense or does not pass, stop, rest, and seek a doctor’s advice.

Cleansing happens in layers

We took on trauma in layers. You remove one layer, then become aware of other layers and remove those too. It does not mean it will never end. It simply means there were many years of trauma — and that is why we cleanse ourselves.

I too have done a lot of work on my throat. I have worked a lot, but there is still more to do: new levels keep coming.

What helps after meditation

  • The oil accelerates the process. With oil, the cleansing is stronger. Add oil, salt, and crystals — that is where you see your cleansing.
  • Charge your crystals. At the full moon, leave them outside to charge in moonlight, and during the day in sunlight. Sometimes place them on the earth too.
  • Sleep with music for the chakra where the energy stopped. On my YouTube channel, Adevăr și Lecuire, I have a chakra playlist. If your energy stopped at the crown, sleep with crown chakra music for at least a week. If it stopped at the solar plexus, use solar plexus music.
  • In the evening, in bed, apply a drop of oil and work. The spiritual strength you put into it matters. We are not running a marathon; we are cleansing.
  • Always work from the zero point, as close to it as possible.

Frequently asked questions about kundalini

What is kundalini?

Kundalini is the vital energy within us. You can visualize it as an energetic serpent of consciousness resting coiled in the root chakra at the base of the spine. When the chakras have been worked on and aligned, the energy rises along the central channel, Sushumna.

What does kundalini awakening mean?

It means this energy rising from the root chakra through all the chakras along the central channel. A wave of energy or a discharge is not the same as a true kundalini awakening. Awakening comes in its own time, when you are ready.

Is activating your kundalini dangerous?

It is not good to force it. If you have much unresolved trauma and are not ready, a kundalini awakening can seriously throw you off balance. Work on your chakras and trauma first, including with a psychotherapist, and listen to your intuition. If you have intense physical or psychological symptoms, see a doctor.

What are Ida, Pingala, and Sushumna?

They are the main energy channels. Ida and Pingala are the two side channels, intertwining like the serpents on the caduceus of Hermes. Sushumna is the central channel through which kundalini passes when the chakras are unblocked.

Why does kundalini energy stop at a particular chakra?

Because there is a block there. Wherever the serpent stopped, that is where you have work to do: spin the chakra, align it, cleanse it with oil, sleep with its music, and work through the trauma associated with it.

What do you feel during energy cleansing?

You may burp, yawn, feel warm, or feel energy stopping in an area of your body. These are common reactions. If a reaction is intense or persists, stop and seek a doctor’s advice.

Do not rush kundalini. Cleanse your chakras layer by layer, gently and with spiritual strength, and the energy will find its own way. With love, namaste.
