A family tree organizes the kinship relations between people. You can start it with what you know about yourself, your parents and grandparents, then add information confirmed through documents or conversations. You do not need to complete all the branches from the start. An empty space is more honest than an assumed link.
Start from verifiable information
For each person, note the known name, the kinship relation and the source of the information. If two accounts differ, keep the difference visible. You can return to it when you find a document or a suitable person to talk to.
Respect the people in the story
Before distributing the tree, ask the consent of the living persons for the information concerning them. Do not publish contact details, documents or intimate stories just because they belong to the family. A version meant for a private discussion can contain other details than one distributed publicly.
Discussions with relatives can also bring silences. You can ask "What would you like to tell me about that period?" and you can accept that the person does not wish to answer. Genealogy does not give you the right to all of someone else's experiences.
Facts, stories and personal reflection
Separate three categories in your notebook: documented information, family story and personal interpretation. For example, a move can be documented; its reason can remain an account. An emotion appearing in a spiritual exercise does not prove what an ancestor lived.
If you explore family patterns, use the tree as a marker for questions. Notice which behaviors you know and which choices you can make today. Do not turn a story about the family line into a verdict about your destiny.
Frequently asked question
Does a family tree prove ancestral karma? No. It organizes kinship information; spiritual interpretations must be kept distinct from facts.
