Self-love: concrete care without perfection

Cristina Balan Written byCristina Balan

Self-love can be practiced through the way you respect your needs, time and boundaries. It does not ask you to like every part of yourself every day. You can be disappointed by a choice and, at the same time, treat yourself with respect.

What it means in ordinary things

A simple gesture is not speaking to yourself as if a mistake described your entire person. "I missed this deadline" leaves room for repair. "I am a failure" gives you very little information about what you have to do.

Care does not have to be earned

Notice what you postpone until you consider yourself good enough: the pause, a quiet meal, a conversation or the refusal of a request. Choose one need you can respect today without imposing a test of merit on yourself.

In relationships, self-love can mean stating your preference before accepting a plan. Do not assume the others must guess what you want. A clear sentence is often more useful than a hidden expectation and the resentment that appears afterwards.

One page for one week

Write three headings: "What demanded much of me", "What helped me", "What I can change". Use concrete events, not labels about character. From the last heading, choose one step that fits your schedule.

If the step is too heavy, make it smaller. Instead of reorganizing the whole week, set aside one single pause. At the end, notice whether you kept the agreement with yourself and what you learned. The practice remains valuable even when you need to adjust it.

Frequently asked question

Is self-love selfishness? Respecting a need can coexist with care for others. Clarify what you can offer without promising beyond your resources.
